This recently restored 17th century
palace within its large grounds,
situated just south of Lisbon,
overlooking the river Tagus, is
ideal for either large families or
groups of friends wanting to enjoy
a unique and totally Portuguese
atmosphere. Alcochete is a
picturesque village rich in horse
riding and bull fighting traditions,
with charming cobbled streets and
pavements and reasonably prices
restaurants and cafes. At dusk, the
distant city lights of ancient Lisbon
and sunsets seen from the terrace
are unforgettable. The property is
decorated in classic Portuguese
style with sofas, carpets and
curtains in warm colors against
blue tiled paneled walls typical of
the era, many antiques, wood
paneled floors and ceilings. The
grounds of this beautiful property
are over seven acres, mostly all of
it a working farm. There are
pathways between the citrus
orchard and vegetable garden,
lawns with colorful shrubs, a
swimming pool in an elevated
position and an all weather tennis
court. There is also a riding paddock
and gentle bridleways / cycling
circuit around the farm. Horses can
be rented locally and brought to the
house on request, and there is a large
supply of bicycles of all sizes
(including tandem) for guests use.
Other games available include
billiards, table tennis and table
football. An old bread oven and built-in
barbeque are located close to the main
house and terrace. There are also
several resident dogs (in kennels) and a
pond with ducks on the grounds.
Around a large paved courtyard are a
further nine newly built suites / self
catering apartments (converted from the
old stables) which can be rented for an
overflow of guests. All are equipped
with TV, phone extensions and
fireplaces, and comfortably furnished,
using bright and colorful fabrics.
For special occasions, or dining
purposes on a full occupancy rental,
there are two large function rooms. One
is newly built, sits on a corner of the
farm and seats up to 40 / 50 people,
with a supporting kitchen and four
toilets. The other is an old wine cellar
below the main house, now converted
to cater up to 100 people. This room is
full of character with stone walls,
wooden beams, a supporting kitchen
and two toilets. Gas and electric heating
are available during the winter months
at extra cost.
